QUITIPLAS IN THE POCKET is a piece for solo improvisation on the slant style (naname) drums. The poly-meter base beat is adapted from the Venezuelan Quitiplas music with a choreographed solo cue that focuses on creating different tonalities of the drum.
“The quitiplas ensemble is played in a circle, as usually a dance is performed in the center. Sometimes a lead singer tells a story, usually improvised, using call-response so dancers can relate and add moves to their basic steps.” -Jackeline Rago (San Francisco Orff Master Class, 2013)
Testimonial from workshop participants
Adam Weiner (San Jose Taiko)
“”Yeeman was an excellent instructor! She made sure everyone was comfortable and informed about what we were going to learn right from the beginning. Yeeman taught the material through several different approaches to help everyone understand it, and was encouraging and supportive throughout the entire workshop. I felt both challenged and a sense of accomplishment, which made for a great experience!”
